Hotfoot up Moel Famau

Last Wednesday saw another outing on this friendly mid-week race, the first of the ‘Clwydian Summer Trots’ series. It goes a little something like this: up, down, up, down, uu-up, doWN. That big up is the horrendous stone gully leading almost to the top of Famau. Really we’ve run up there sufficient times to know better by now. It’s not a fit place to walk, let alone attempt to race. Nevertheless several Helsby vests were out for this great little race.

Some characteristically bonkers prizes from organiser Martin – a water pistol, chocolate, watering can and sleeping mat, amongst the usual beer and wine.

Helsby positions:

8 Adair Broughton Helsby 40.17

17 Jim O’Hara Helsby 43.38

23 Steve Riley Helsby 45.37

29 Jane Ashbrook Helsby 47.13

50 Chris Hatton Helsby 53.05

62 Robbie Webster Helsby 61.11

Jane came away with 2nd female prize and Jim took a spot prize for ‘most creative final descent’. Well done both! Full results from WFRA. and pics from www.prdouglas.co.uk

Tattenhall Tough Team Challenge

On the evening of Friday 18th June you had a choice.

Option 1 was to put your feet up, break open a 6-pack and cheer our boys on in the presumed formality of their World Cup match against Algeria.

Option 2 was to enjoy the delights of the 17th annual  Tattenhall Tough Team Race, including subjecting yourself to the horrors of ‘The Railway’!

Despite the not inconsiderable challenge that The Railway involved, (including the risk of allowing a doppelganger for The Grim Reaper who was positioned at the top and offered everyone a helping hand to negotiate the final step!) and of course with the benefit of hindsight (perhaps!), everyone who decided on Option 1 was left with a sour taste in their mouth.

In contrast, those opting for Option 2 enjoyed a beautiful balmy evening with the sun setting over the hills of Beeston and Peckforton, fantastic views, followed by excellent refreshments in the Tattenhall Club afterwards.

On the night Helsby fielded 4 teams out of a field of 53 (159 runners in total) which was an excellent showing, not least because the Ladies Vet’s team comprising Rachel Arnold, Vanessa Griffiths and Lesley Feakes won the Ladies Vets Prize. A well deserved congratulations to them!

I’m not surprised that Lesley’s laughing!

Everyone enjoyed an excellent evening’s run with great team spirit and camaraderie and such is the lure of the event, next year’s race will already be in our diaries.

Helsby results are as follows:

29th, 80:32, The Old Greens – Andy Smith, Albert Berry, Mike Searle

34th, 83:23, Here for the view – Rachel Arnold, Vanessa Griffiths, Lesley Feakes

42nd, TGI Friday – Graham Lloyd, Dave Feakes, Karen Jones

49th, 91:15, Living in hope – Chris Igoe, Ivor Johnstone, John Gallon

Trail Up The Beast – Fell Counter Results

Hi all

With 20 runners not completing the course and others taking a wrong turn maybe it was the Beast that actually won this race.

Even so, with a slightly modified course including a few more forest twists and an extra scramble up the Beast it was an interesting night for Helsby runners.

With said green vested crew getting closer to each other with every race and some very promising early running from Jim O’Hara everyone was working hard on what was a sunny night but not overly warm due to the deep forest cover for much of the race. Definitely an interesting course and one I’d recommend to keep in the calendar, short, sharp and varied. Well done to all involved and for Joe working hard vocally in the woods. And if Jim hadn’t took a wrong turn would Chris have caught him….? The tension builds…
