Border league race 3 – non-competitive

Icy conditions presented themselves to the Helsby Green that showed up near Hoylake on Sunday morning. Due to this, race organisers decided to wait for the low sun to warm the race route but even after three fifteen-minute delays icy patches still prevailed.

It was then decided that the race would be run but only as a non-scoring race. Some runners on a tight schedule had to leave and others decided not to risk slipping on the icy conditions.

The race start was moved to begin away from the worst of the ice but there were still slippy areas throughout. The race was a shortened 4.9miles according to the results available via the link below

Over two hundred did eventually ‘race’ and results attached for information only.

26th Adair Broughton           28.46

53rd Ian Landucci                  30.45

162nd Chris Hatton                37.56

178th Alec Robertson           39.39

214th Robbie Webster            44.54

Please note the next Border League race is Sunday 13th February. Details will follow nearer the time.

Stockport 10 Race Results and Report

Hi all

Many thanks to Ivan for his excellent race report for the Stockport 10 at the weekend.

Two Helsby runners, Ivan and Dave donned the green vest and braved the cold weather for the Stockport 10. The entry sheet said the 1000 limit had been reached but it looked like a few runners drew back the curtains and decided to go back to bed, as only 680 seemed to have completed the race.

The course is a mixture of track, road and some off road over a testing 10 miles, including 2 hills at 5.5 and 8 miles which were real leg killers. It was a shame that it clashed with the border league event as it is a very well organised event, well marshalled and has the added bonus of  the finish being on a synthetic track with a great announcer on the mic entering the “stadium” for the final last lap of the track…you almost feel like a pro !!!

Despite the icy conditions underfoot the race got underway on time with two laps of the running track before heading out on the roads. Conditions were very slippery underfoot, but the times don’t seem to have suffered too much.

The winner had apparently been in Kenya for the last 6 weeks training at altitude; looks like it paid off !!!

This bit is taken straight from the Stockport harriers home page…

“It also appears that a new world record was set at this year’s race. The record was set by Lee Riley, who covered the ten-mile distance in 73:10 carrying a 40lb backpack. Lee, who spent ten years in the armed forces, is aiming to run the London marathon in under four hours carrying his backpack to set another world record and to raise funds for The Soldiers’ Charity”

I (Ivan) passed Lee at about 4 miles and couldn’t believe what I saw…his rucksack was massive and he was really shifting!!

Positions and times below for Ivan and Dave

110th  Ivan Davies             1:08:25

288th  David Madders        1:17:48

So if anyone else participates in other races then please let us know! It’s really good to receive race reports like this.

Northwest XC Race 3 Results – Arrowe Park

Hi – Please find attached a link to the latest results in the Northwest XC series, Race 3, held @ Arrowe Park 5th December

It was a wind free and cloudless blue sky for those attempting the run and almost felt ‘warm’ after thirty plus minutes of running on the one small lap and two large lap 4.54m course; however conditions underfoot were quite tough due to hard ground, ice and frost in places. Spikes or fell shoes definitely the order of the day.

The main field was sparkling white when we arrived but the grass did appear in places once the sun had breached the trees.

Four from Helsby decided to put their names on the team sheet and positions attached.

11th Adair Broughton

58th Phil Gillard

85th Andy Smith

11th Janet Robertson

Helsby Men currently in 9th place and Ladies in 8th.

The next XC race in the Northwest League is 16th January, Town Park nr Runcorn.

Christmas activities

Saturday 18th December: Joint run with Spectrum Striders over the hills from the Ring O’Bells in Frodsham. Meet 8:45 for a 9am start if you want to do 2 laps of the hill, otherwise 10:15 for a 10:30 start for just a single lap. Convene in the pub afterwards for a social get together, a pint, some nosh and generally warm up. Julian (from Spectrum) is organising some hot food – veggie and non-veggie – for about a fiver. If you want to pre-order some food, can you let me know prior to the day? Non-runners are also welcome to come to the pub as well.

Wednesday 22nd December: Club handicap. A shortish fun run against the clock replaces the regular club run, slowest sets off first, the fastest last and if the handicapper has done their job correctly, everyone finishes together… mince pies in the club afterwards for the ‘prize giving’. Bring a small gift (value of about a fiver) to put on the table and then pick a ‘prize’ when your name is called out.

Will also incorporate the draw for the Club places in the London Marathon. To be eligible you need to have applied for next years event and been rejected (bring your rejection letter along), we also expect participation in at least 2 Border League races this year. Let me or Phil know of your interest in the draw beforehand.

Wednesday 29th December: The club should be open as usual, so the regular Wednesday club run to get some fresh air and work off a bit of the Christmas pud.

Sunday 2nd January: Envelope stuffing! With the Shell Four Villages Half Marathon almost upon us, we will have 2000 envelopes to fill with numbers and info booklets. The more help, the faster it goes. Start at 2pm in the club. If there is enough interest, we can arrange a run in the morning beforehand.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and an excellent New Year!

L&D xc race 2 results & Euro xc qualifier

Only one runner from Helsby at this event, Phil Gillard. This was the 2nd event in the Liverpool & District XC league but incorportated one of the premier XC events of the season, the European Cross Country Trials, so the standard was exceptionally high

A frosty, sunny afternoon in Liverpool with conditions underfoot being ideal for X country – hard ground in patches and a few muddy spots but generally forgiving ground. A three lap course which mixed runners trying to qualify for the GB team with club runners from the Lancs League and Liverpool League gave a well populated field with a vast spectrum of abilities

122nd & 1041 00:43:25 Phil Gillard M Helsby RC

The next L&D event, Race 3 is this weekend, Sat 11th December, at Beacon Park at 2.00pm, which is also in our club Winter XC fixtures

Many thanks to Phil for the race report.
