Hi all
Trail up the Beast on Tuesday 11th was our third fell counter of the season and has become a popular race for Helsby members while also enticing new people to try fell running each year. It was a busy night with some talented local athletes out. There were lots out for Helsby too and a great evening was had by all, especially at the comedy prize giving afterwards which was almost like a Helsby procession at times with winners for Helsby including Chris, Jayne, Vanessa, Janet, Rachel and Tom. Chris Baynham-Hughes was first in for Helsby after a closely fought battle with Jim O’Hara. Jayne Joy was first lady home overall and smashed the course record by over a minute showing her improvement appears to know no bounds. Adrian and Tom were also much faster on the course than the same time last year. 14 out for Helsby in a field of 90 runners.

Saturday saw Andy Robinson compete in the Welsh Vegan 3000s, some details below and a race report from Andy:
http://www.vegan-welsh-3000s.co.uk/
“ Just a note to let you know I ran the Vegan Welsh 3000s race on Saturday. 31 miles & over 13000 feet of ascent, which is a lot more up than any other race I’ve ever done – only the Joss Naylor & the Bob Graham have had more climbing. It really was a great day out, if a bit windy on the tops. 11:14 and 11th place for me, & I’m happy enough with that. I’d guess there were about 30 finishers – the results aren’t out yet, but quite a few failed to finish. The Snowdon section was cold, claggy, & we even had some hail. Crib Goch was dropped from the race due to the weather: I thought I might do it anyway, but my hands were numb despite the gloves so I decided that could wait until another day. The going was harder than I expected over the Glyders section, & that slowed me down & tired my legs out a lot: there’s a lot of scree & a lot of boulders, & the rest of it has a lot of stones sticking up (anyone else tripped on the top of Skiddaw? There were miles like that). The Carnedds were much better running once we’d flogged up Pen yr Ole Wen – just as well as I was running on empty by then. It stayed windy & cold on the tops, but the clag lifted after Snowdon & the running conditions weren’t bad at all, with good views. I didn’t know the route at all apart from the top of Snowdon, so it was good exploration for me too. And a finish in a pub beer garden, sitting out in the sun – what more could you want?”
Great report Andy and well done!
Sunday was the inaugural run of Sport in the Port 10k and 5k. For more information and results please visit the website below. Out for Helsby in the 10k were Roy and Clare. I’ve not seen any other Helsby members in the results so if you ran please let me know and I can update the blog accordingly. Over 600 runners out in the 10k so great positions for Roy and Clare too with Clare hitting under 50 minutes for the first time, good stuff!
58th Roy Gaskill 41.01
215th Clare-Louise Miller 48.01

Also on Sunday was the Cross Bay Challenge that Lesley and Dave feakes participated in. Please find some words from Dave below
Lesley and I ‘competed’ in the Cross Bay Challenge on Sunday 16th June which is a half marathon across Morecambe Bay from Hest Bank near Carnforth to Flookburgh. Both of us had not run seriously for several weeks and so we naively thought this would be a good way to ease our way back into competitive running. The course is definitely flat but the sand and water crossings meant that it was not a PB course. A very enjoyable and well organised event that I would recommend to others. To members who are thinking of running the event, please note that the combination of sand and seawater can lead to serious chafing and so I recommend the use of vaseline (no further details should be necessary).
· David – Time: 01:57:49, position: 214
· Lesley – Time: 02:00:36, position: 238
We’re competing in the Malvern marathon this weekend which runs over the Malvern Hills and we’ll let you know how we go on.
Wish everyone good luck in the Tough Team Challenge on Friday.”
I’d also like to add that we have a talented cyclist (as well as runner in our Helsby midst). Jim O’Hara, somehow fresh from his close battle with Chris at the Beast on Tuesday was an amazing 10th place in the Etap Eyryi Canol 76 mile bike ride. Full results for this are on the tdl website.

I’d love to hear about other events (than running) people are involved in, so whatever your other achievements please let us know
Keep up the good work
