Sunday saw the first road counter of the year at the Cheshire 10k in Arley Hall in Northwich. This was a flat and fast course starting in the beautiful grounds of Arley Hall, heading out onto the surrounding roads for 1 lap and then back to the hall for the finish. It was a highly competitive race at the sharp end of the field with the winner breaking the 30 minute mark! Although Helsby refused to be outclassed and with 8 Helsby vests out and some impressive times everyone did a fantastic job! Excellent running from Clare Miller saw her take a minute off her best 10k time for a PB and first Helsby lady home, Dave matched his 10k PB and Roy getting close to that sub 40! Well done to everyone who turned out for this race and special thanks to Mario and Rhona Cook who came along to support. Please find Helsby times below:

I couldn’t seem to view the official results so these are extracted from Run Britain and don’t show any age category positions. If you think you got an age cat podium position please let me know and I’ll get the blog updated. One we know is Jackie taking top honours in her cat, top effort when you think of her warm-up at Coniston the day before (below)!

[Ed — Colin will be too modest to mention it, but he secured a brilliant PB at Arley, great confidence booster showing what quality shape he’s in and payback for recent hard training!]

CWAC Sports Awards 2014

On Thursday the Cheshire West and Chester Annual Sports Awards presentation dinner took place at the Portal Hotel near Tarporley. Jane Ashbrook had nominated Helsby Running Club as Club of the Year, but unfortunately we did not make it to the final 3.  Jo Farwell was nominated as Volunteer of the Year for her involvement in  Sky Breeze Ladies cycling plus Helsby Running Club and made it to the last 3 so was invited to the dinner which a number of us attended. It was a great sporting evening with over 200 people attending. Jo was pipped by a couple who run the Phoenix BasketBall team in Chester.  Her friend, who Jo nominated, Sarah Brailsford, won the Special Achiever award, for Breeze Ladies cycling.  Another couple on our table won the Best Special School award, so our table was very successful. For the full set of awards see

The highlight was the pre-dinner speaker, Mark Colbourne, paraolympic london 2012 cyclist, mens individual pursuit C1 gold medal winner. He broke his back paragliding in 2009, then took up cycling to complete a charity ride for a friend for rehab and got hooked. He won his medal at the age of 42 and broke the world record!  They showed the whole win on the screen to cheers.  He now travels giving inspirational talks!  Photos attached of me and Jo, holding his gold medal I got that same feeling as holding Joes’s torch!

Sunday April 6th 11am  – Border League – Wirral

Last but one Border League race, all runners count with the competition hotting up for final team placings, both mens and ladies team currently lying 3rd in their divisions. A new 5.2 mile course along the promenade at New Brighton (CH45 2PB 11am) or meet at the club at 9:45am if you want to lift share.

Finally a reminder, for a week wednesday:

Wednesday April 9th 8:30pm   – Strength Training for Runners Talk

Mike Searle’s talk targeting runners for a) performance and b) health. In the club house after our club run with a chip balm supper to sustain us.

Cheers, Jackie

If I have missed anyone off the results or missed a race please email me or Steve Riley and we’ll endeavour to get the blog updated.

Thanks, Colin T

Saturday and Sunday saw the GinPit Double Marathon with Gareth Boyd challenging himself with the double. Race report from Gareth below

This weekend, I competed in The GinPit Double Marathon again – the same marathon course run twice over 2 days. It’s a low key event (only 45 runners) but extremely well organised with 4 x great marshal/checkpoints points (biscuits/sweets and water  ) along the way.  Most of it is run off road – trail/canal path (lots of mud and water and windy conditions but really flat!)  and it’s a really good way to test those legs if you’re considering running an ultra or two during the year or just doing something different.

It was also the Liverpool Half this weekend with seven green vests on display with the first home Chris Fitzpatrick. Joanne was first Helsby lady. Race report from Jackie below

Liverpool Half an epic this morning too with very strong winds along the Wilderspool promenade for the last 4 miles! Not done this before and it was one of the most iconic half’s I have done for a while.  Finishing in front of the Liver Bulidings with a Samba band playing was on a par with the atmosphere at the London Marathon! The daffodils’ in Sefton Park were lovely too. All these things take your mind off tired legs!

That’s it for the round-up this week

I’ll be on holiday next week so if anyone would like to keep the blog updated for this weekend’s races i’m sure everyone at Helsby will be appreciative but no problem if not. If anyone would like to do it I can also give you the address for the Chester Chronicle as we get a brief round-up of our races there too so they’ll need to be sent by Tuesday of each week. Normal service will be resumed the subsequent week so it’s not so bad if we miss a week’s worth of news, its really just to let people know the results of races for this coming weekend.

Keep on running

Spring and Summer dates for your Diary

Dear Helsby Runner

With just few Border League races left to go now, April 6th at Wirral and April 23rd at Deestriders. The summer fell and road championships are now underway. There’s plenty of running and races to do with Helsby Running Club this spring and summer.

The summer road and fell club championship race lists is now complete. It’s been updated to include all the interclub fell championship races that have now been agreed between Spectrum, Tattenhall, Pensby and us. They are Up the Beast, Moel Siabod and Shelf Moor. Plus Chris B-H has fixed the date for the Robbie Webster Wobbler on Wed August 20th. There are 12 road races and 13 fell races to choose from in each championship; your best 7 results to count in each championship, a minimum of 4 needed to qualify for a prize. Do come along and try some of the races in each championships. Some of the shorter fell races will be a good introduction to fell races; please check with us which ones, they are great fun!

Plus we have a number of other events this summer which we hope to see you at:

Wednesday April 9th 8:30pm – Strength Training for Runners Talk
Mike Searle’s talk targeting runners for a) performance and b) health. In the club house after our club run with a chip balm supper to sustain us.
Wednesday May 21st 8:30pm – AGM
Please come along with your ideas and comments and help drive the club forward in the direction everyone wants to go! Minutes, agenda and club positions will be circulated before the meeting. If anyone wants to volunteer for posts. please let us know, new blood is always welcome!

Friday 27th June 6:30pm – Summer Handicap, Presentation Evening and BBQ
After last year’s successful presentation evening on a Friday we have decided to repeat it. As a lot of Wednesday evenings in July and August are already busy with club counters and other “must do” races, we thought combining this evening with Phil’s summer handicap competition beforehand would make it an action packed evening and give us big appetites for the BBQ. The Summer 2013 road and fell and the Winter 2013/2014 Cross Country and Border League club championship prizes will be presented at this prestigious annual running club event! Partners and friends welcome to join us for the evening. Dave and Lesley will be in contact about the food arrangements.

Wednesday July 30th 8:30pm – Nutrition for Runners Talk
Jayne Joy talk on food for runners with chip balm supper to whet our appetites!

Wednesday 20th August 7pm – Robbie Webster Wobbler
Our club run this Wednesday will move to Frodsham for the 2nd Robbie Webster Wobbler. Chris B-H is working on the format for this year’s race, e.g. course, land permissions, who we open the race up to etc. Chris Hatton has kindly made some wooden carved trophies for various race categories, details to be issued nearer the time. After last year’s successful evening back at the club following the race we will probably do the same again i.e. use some of the entry fee to provide sandwiches back at the community sports club.

The position on the new club house build, after many years of stagnation and waiting, is at a exciting stage. All club sections (runners, footballers, rugby, tennis, bowls, fishing & social) have reached agreement on the design of the new facilities. The plans are with the developers Brookhouse who plan to issue them to CWAC for final planning approval this month and come up with final costings based on the agreed designs. The new house build will then go out for tender. Brookhouse, who have already invested a lot of money in the project are keen and confident this will all happen quickly and new build could start as early as this Autumn. Our current club facilities will be operational until the new facilities are built. The plans are attached. Sadly there is no running track for us but there is a 2m wide running path around the 3 G pitch and we can obviously use the 3G pitch and indoor sports hall facilities. The changing rooms and bar/lounge facilities look awesome, particularly the bar on the first floor overlooking the sports facilities.

Hope to see you at many of our club training nights, races and these Spring and Summer events.

Any questions please ask me or any committee member.

Lions Weaver Run 2014 RACE POSTPONED

This race has been postponed.
I am from Vale Royal Lions and we are organising a Run based in Northwich; Cheshire Search & Rescue.
The Run starts and finishes at Sir John Deane’s College, Monarch Avenue, Northwich and there are 2 courses, a 7 miles and a 3 miles, both largely following the river Weaver. The event opens at 9.30 am with the 7 miles run starting at 10.30 am, followed by the 3 miles at 10.45 am.
Registration for the Run is via www.entrycentral.com but, at present, we have few participants, although runners can turn up and register on the day.
I wonder if you could publicise our Run amongst your athletes; it would be great to meet some on the day. As Lions we raise money to assist those in need in our community, so we are hoping for a good turnout.
Many thanks for your co-operation

Saturday and Sunday saw the weekend Bolton Hill Marathon where Dave and Lesley Feakes ran on Saturday’s race.

Just a quick note to let you know that Lesley and I took part in the Bolton Hill Marathon on Saturday 8th March. This was the second year the event has taken place and it is described as one of the toughest marathons in the UK. The route follows some of the most beautiful trails and Country Roads on the West Pennine Moors and took us up and over Winter Hill, past White Coppice and along Anglezarke Reservoir, past Rivington Pike and Barn, through Barrow Bridge village and down the famous miners 63 steps to the finish on the outskirts of Bolton. The race is well organised and the marshalling and drink / food stations were fantastic. The event takes place over 2 days and so some hardy souls completed both races.

The terrain was certainly variable. In some places you needed fell shoes and in others you could have comfortably got away with road shoes. We wore trail shoes which for me was a bad decision as I ended up face down in several peat bogs whilst Mrs Feakes nimbly jogged across them. We ran the race together and completed it in a time of 04hrs 55mins 36secs which we were very happy with given our goal of completing it in under 5hrs. A great race and one I would recommend to others.

133rd                 Dave Feakes                 4.55.36
134th                 Lesley Feakes               4.55.36

Jim Jones was at the Ian Roberts Fell Race, his second of two races at the weekend. Race report below

“I did the Ian Roberts Fell Race on Sunday. A great course around Marsden Moor in ‘Last of The Summer Wine ‘ country. The glorious sunshine topped a great event hosted by Holmirth Harriers and was well worth the dive up there. The first 3 miles of the 6.4 mile route was a steady climb over mostly tussocky grass, interspersed with boggy areas. Then came the hard work! A steep 250ft climb followed by a steady descent before another hardish climb and some slippery descents. There was then a decent run into the finish at Marsden Cricket Club and some fabulous home made cakes and a very generous buffet laid on by the Harriers. A great day out, and I even went home with sun tan and bottle of wine spot prize too.”

For more information please see here

and results should appear in time here

Sunday was also the St Helens 10k where Helsby’s Colin Bishop ran in a top ten performance and with a fantastic time too.

It was also the Trafford 10k where John Thompson ran, a few words below

“I ran the Trafford 10K on Sunday in 47.40, a very fast course which attracted many top runners at the sharp end including World Triathlon Champion Non Stanford (although she failed to finish!)”

The Pipe dream Fell race on Saturday saw Jim Jones into a top 50 placing on this tough up and downer in Dolgarrog. Jim’s race report is below.

“I did the Pipe Dream fell race in Dolgarrog on Saturday. The weather turned out well with it being a bright cool morning but it was still wet and muddy underfoot throughout the race. It was the first time I’d done this race and I’d heard a lot about the steep ascent up the steps right after the start. However, there was a route change this year on account of some major works being undertaken on the pipe. So we set off on a very steep zig zag climb through the woods to the left of the pipe and rejoined the pipe after about 0.8 of a mile. We then followed the pipe along the top to then what seemed a mad dash back down to Dolgarrog.

The descent was a real mixed bag and technically challenging. There really did seem to be a bit of everything from grassy tussocks, woodland with a stream-bed and plenty of rocks and roots to negotiate, to metalled road, and even a construction site! (which I understand was a further temporary deviation in the route this year). Again, being a newcomer to fell running, the descent was where I lost a lot of time. But at least I now know where to cut the corners next year, as there was some scope to choose your route.

Eryri, who host the race, are inviting feedback on their blog as to whether to keep the zig zag climb instead of the steps for next year.”

Please also find some information from Louise regarding the new Thursday night sessions.

“Hi all

Col and I went to try Chris Baynham-Hughes and Roy Gaskill’s session this evening at Phoenix Park.

I found it to be a very enjoyable and varied session with a wide range of activities that had been carefully thought about to improve overall running fitness.

The activities were suitable for myself and Colin despite the difference in pace and ability.

The park was very quiet, had plenty of lighting and the pathyways made it perfect for running in colder/rainier weather.

I would highly recommend!

Lou & Colin”

As always, keep on running
