Roy Gaskill decided to venture further afield and he entered the Marple 5k Park Run on Saturday to finish 17th overall in 20.22. Roy states “very accurate course a bit different from park runs I’ve done with no tarmac and lots of fields and few tracks and not very flat.”

It was the Llangynhafal Loop Fell Race on Saturday afternoon which was also a club fell counter and a fantastic turn-out for Helsby saw 18 green vests out in the field of 82 in total. Impressive performances all round saw Jim O’Hara first senior male home with Jayne 1st lady overall. Other notable prize winners on the day were Janet, Mario and Alec but some wonderful and exciting performances all round, especially the Phil Gillard and Dave Feakes downhill race-off! Well done also to Lizzie who chose quite a difficult first fell race. Rumours are Mario is still locked away playing with his prize…………you’ll have to ask him when you see him.

Special congratulations to Jackie who not only ran the Loop but then didn’t stop and continued to Abergele. Awesome!

Sunday was the Liverpool Spring 10k at Sefton Park where Colin Thompson and new recruit Gaz were the Helsby representatives. Colin kept up his good form with a great time of 35.21 nudging him ever nearing to the sub 35 he is more than capable of Gaz had a brilliant sub 40 PB as well. Well done!

Race report from Colin below

“Myself and new Helsby recruit Gaz O’Connor ran the Liverpool Spring 10k on Sunday. The course starts in the middle of Sefton Park by the café and is a 2 lap course, a few twists and turns and quite undulating. I must admit, I ran this race last year and didn’t enjoy it at all, it was a hot day, the course was tough (with a set of steps at the half way point –thankfully removed for 2014) and I blew up towards the end and lost a load of time and places. I was determined to have a better race this time round. I took to the start line in pen 1 and the usual Merseyside suspects were there, more notably John Connolly of Penny Lane Striders and Neil Cosgrove who runs for Knowsley. I have been in some close battles with them recently but always seem to lose out by a few seconds so was determined to stay with them to the finish this time. The gun went off and the pace was quick from the start, my garmin read 5:30 min miles which is my 5k pace! I felt ok though and settled with a group from Liverpool Harriers. First lap done at 5k mark at 5:37 pace and on target for the sub 35 I’ve been chasing, but things changed rapidly. I started to struggle. It was a hot day again and there are some tough sections on the course which have some killer hills. I was still with the Liverpool Harriers runners but John came running past around the 8k mark and the group started to pull away. I dug in deep but really had nothing left. The finish is on a steep climb around 100m long, I tried to put on a sprint but my legs were jelly, I crossed the line and looked at the garmin and was very surprised to see 35:21, I really thought I’d lost more time on that second lap but actually beat my Arley Hall PB, I lost out to John but ahead of Neil for once! I was made up with the result and gives me huge confidence going into future 10ks, where hopefully on a flatter course and cooler conditions I can get my target time! Big thanks to Louise, Col Bishop and Jane for their support on the day, and a big congratulations to Gaz for a great run also going sub 40 and getting a PB in the process. This is a great race and a big event, around 3000 on the day, brilliant organisation and a fantastic samba band adds to the atmosphere.”

In a rather pleasant day off work Helsby’s Jayne Joy headed to Glossop for the James Thorn Fell Race. With someone removing all the flags from what was the night before a flagged course many people ended up running off course or adding extra miles including race leader Andi Jones who remarkably still ended up 2nd after a long detour. No results as yet but Jayne achieved a 2nd place finish so another podium in the bag. It’s also worth noting that Ex Helsby fell runner Danny Chan was a brilliant 3rd in this event and is now running for Pennine. If you are reading Danny, good to see you and keep up the great achievements on the fells.

If I’ve missed any events please let me know and I’ll update the blog but if you do want to be in the round-up then it’s always good to let me know.

In other news

As mentioned in a previous email, Dinas Bran on Wednesday, be good to have a good Helsby turnout as I’ll hopefully be there with the camera. Lads, a bit of make-up wouldn’t go amiss, the girls look great.

Adrian has asked if anyone would like their names on their Helsby Hoody. It costs about £3 for a full name. Please see Adrian on a Wednesday to arrange.

Keep on running

Adair
