Push up the Pincyn on Saturday afternoon was a warm affair in a sunny spot of North Wales. Against the backdrop of the Clwydians is this great but under supported fell race that takes place as part of a village show with old tractors, chain wielding Welshmen and fine fettled horses some of the things on display. The Pincyn isn’t as mighty as some of the Clwydians but from Clawddnewydd over undulating fields on a warm afternoon it certainly feels like it. A great race to try not least for the novelty hay bale jump.

Jayne Joy did more than try though with an impressive win for 1st female dominating the field and finishing 6th overall. New runner Adair Broughton coughing up a lung was happy he managed to finish and Mario Foschi was once again a prize winner for his age category. Tim had a great run for 26th and Jim Jones for 29th on his second race of the day, fair play!

Results are already up on the wfra website alongside a race report that states the following “The prize giving was once again a no-expense-made affair with Jayne Joy just missing out on anything remotely interesting to claim the bottle of Toilet Duck! That’s what taking part is all about.” I wonder if any other England Internationals have ever won anything like that!

Thanks to great support from Joe and Jenny Palmer on the day.

6th           Jayne Joy                             50.35
13th         Adair Broughton               56.23
18th         Mario Foschi                      61.15
26th         Tim Palmer                         66.21
29th         Jim Jones                             67.19

Also on Saturday afternoon was the Beetham Sports Fell Race. Great race report from Phil below

“Report from Beetham Sports

So many fell races, so little time – what a great feeling waking up on a Saturday morning with the choice of 2 fantastic fell races – Push up the Pincyn – North Wales or Beetham Sports – South Cumbria. So, how do you decide, it was the M6 which decided; as we were going to a party in Ramsbottom on the Saturday evening, we opted for the South Cumbrian race to allow Helen even more time to make herself even more gorgeous than she is already 🙂

Arriving at the sports field we were greeted by the site of a loosely marked sports field and hoards of eager Cumbrians all awaiting their chance to shine at running, obstacles races and traditional Cumbrian wrestling. I must admit I really love this low key, community based way of keeping traditional sports going as well as giving the youngsters an insight into how to manage the thrill of competition in front of an appreciative and vocal crowd. The site of Paul, Jamie, friends and family was a welcome site as we settled down to watch the best of Beetham in advance of the fell race

Onto the fell race – 6 miles, woods, open fields and pasture land, steady ascents and descents, all very runnable, nothing technical apart from a 10m scramble through a limestone chimney at the top of the “fairy steps”. A good steady workout for a sunny Saturday afternoon. Helen tells me that some of the early finishers got mixed up with the obstacle race – two races for the price of one, how good is that”

As stated by Phil also out was Paul Foster and Jamie and Paul’s race report is below

“For the second year running we made our visit to the Beetham sports gala day in Cumbria .This is now become a family trip which also involves a weekend of camping in nearby Bolton le sands . The gala is a great day for all the family which has kids races, wrestling, adult races as well as the main fell race.

Luckily the fell race starts at 3.30 which gives you plenty of time to shake of the late night drinking around the camp fire.

As I sat around enjoying the British weather it was good to see two familiar faces walking our way Phil Gillard and his wife Helen had also decided to make the visit up north . The fell race itself is a great race which starts in the show field follows a well-marked route across fields, a few hills then back for the finish in the show ground

The race is 5.8 miles with 928ft of climb, the 70 degree heat made me think a lot about a cold beer for the last few miles . If anybody fancies a great day out with or without the family I would recommend this race.”

Phil Gillard hitting a rich vein of form was 1st in for Helsby.

37th       Phil Gillard                           49.21
45th       Jamie Dowdall                   52.09 (2nd claim)
55th       Paul Foster                         54.09
