North West XC race 5 results – sunday 5th february 2012

Hi all

Please find attached results for the 5th race of the North West XC season which was held in Walton Park and hosted by Liverpool running club on Sunday 5th February

Full results below:

According to feedback from other runners this was an improved and longer than advertised, two lap course, although still fairly flat and in good xc running conditions on the day. Distance was roughly 5.3 miles.

Helsby ladies continue to show their class and XC quality, confidently striding to an impressive two point victory in the team event on the day. Still improving brilliantly is Jayne Joy. It should be noted that this is her first season at the cross country and from her first race coming 17th ran a composed and clever race to out sprint one of the top performing women in this league to finish 2nd lady.

All Helsby ladies finished in the top half of the field so shows the strength in depth we have at the club and we should congratulate and be impressed by all the performances.

Disappointingly we only had two male finishers in this race but thanks to everyone who turned up to race or to their much needed and grateful support. As usual Joe and Mario were in fine voice supporting and thanks also to Jane Ashbrook and Andy Smith supporting on the last lap too.

There is a great atmosphere at these particular XC events, not to mention the free refreshments available afterwards so if you want to be part of it there is still the final race of the season to look forward too or try. There is still a little debate about the date for this but information will be sent out as soon as it is available.

Details of Helsby runners and positions from Sunday’s race are below:

7th        Adair Broughton

88th      Steve Riley

2nd       Jayne Joy

13th      Vanessa Griffiths

16th      Carol Shaw

17th      Rachel Arnold

19th      Janet Robertson

NWXC Results race 3 arrowe park 4th dec 2011

Hi all

Well it’s been nearly a month! but results are now online for the Arrowe Park XC race that was Race 3 in the Northwest XC series held on 4th December 2011.

Full results can be found at the website below

as well as some photographs I managed to take here

After having slept a couple of times since the race I will have to apologise for a limited report, however, I can remember some great Helsby performances, a little bit of mud and a few spots of rain held under a sky the colour of concrete.

Ian Landucci stormed round for the men in 1st place for the Helsby contingent and 28th place overall ably followed by Roy Gaskill who ran admirably well considering it was his first foray into cross country.

Helsby men’s positions and times as below:

28th         Ian Landucci
61st         Roy Gaskill
83rd        Adrian Jackson
90th         Andy Smith

However, it is with the Helsby ladies where some significant improvements were spotted with Jayne leading home the charge for an amazing 5th place overall, with Vanessa chasing hard behind for a great 13th and Rachel just behind in 18th which meant all the Helsby ladies finished in the first half of the field.

5th           Jayne Joy
13th         Vanessa Griffiths
18th         Rachel Arnold

The ladies team is currently in joint 2nd place with all to play for! Well done.

The next race in this series is Town Park, Runcorn on 15th January. It will be great to have some strong teams for what is a local race.

Thanks also to support from Joe and Mario on the day

good looking and green

Stadt Moers cross country

Saturday afternoon saw Paul Porter and Steve Riley line up for the Stadt Moers (sounds much more exciting than Huyton) cross country, with a light drizzle threatening to turn into rain. Another in the Liverpool and District league, and one of the better courses in my opinion. The country park doesn’t look initially promising, but a clever course design and some interesting terrain, makes for a good outing. In the event it stayed dry for the race, but there was still plenty of mud on the ground.

We started off with a smaller loop of around 500m to thin out the 140-ish strong crowd, and then moved on to complete 3 laps of the full loop. Around 5.5 miles all in, I’d guess. Paul had a good run in his very first cross country outing and now I think it’s safe to say he’s got the bug. Steve was able to capitalise on the mud by wearing spikes and pushing it a bit more on the corners and descents to just stay ahead of the stronger runner. If you can’t be fast, be cunning!

One of the reasons this I like this course is that it’s fairly intricate and loops back in a couple of places, so there’s always something to see — faster runners to chase or slower runners to stay ahead of. Recommended for next time.

Thanks to the organisers and thanks again to Dave Pinnington for the pic. See you at the next one!
